Head's Introduction Dear Parents,
I take pleasure in writing the opening statement for our brochure. The brochure serves as an introduction to our School and provides you with the necessary facts allowing you, and importantly your child, to integrate into our community as soon as possible.
I commenced as Headteacher of Costessey Junior School at the beginning of the summer term 2002. At that time our School was subject to Special Measures but that status was lifted on the 1st April 2003. Progress continued thereafter and our School was re inspected in February 2005. The efforts of pupils, staff, parents and Governors were recognised in the report that followed. Inspectors said, “In a very short period of time this has become a good school.” “Pupils achieve well.” “Pupils’ attitudes, behaviour and personal development are very good.” “This is a very caring school in which pupils’ well being is given a high priority.” The school was inspected again in November 2007; the report confirmed our continued progress and I quote; “it provides a good and improving education”, “it has some outstanding features”, “ this is a calm and happy school” and “pupils leave as well-rounded young people.” Please visit the Ofsted web site to read the full report. Comments such as these are an accurate reflection of our school but they did not make us complacent and we have continued to build on this success; the reward saw our school designated as a National Support School from May 2009. Only 500 of these such schools, with good capacity to support others, currently exist nationally and only three such are in Norfolk. Our continued aim is to support our community, and by supporting others as well, continue our own progress. Further verification of progress was received in June 2010, the award of Headteacher of the Year for Primary Schools in the East of England. We see the award as marking the achievements of the whole school over the years.
As of the summer term 2008 and set to continue till August 2011 our school is partnered with another in the city and hence I am the Partnership Headteacher for both schools. In practice this means I am present at Costessey for approximately half of each working day. When I am not here Miss Cocks, our Assistant Headteacher, fulfils all of my duties. The Partnership arrangement affords good opportunities for both schools to better deploy the skills of individual employees and provide mutual support. My own vision is for a school where every individual achieves their personal best, academically and socially in a supportive but challenging system; all this should occur in a quality working environment. In practice this means that the school will strive to meet the targets it sets, more importantly will do everything possible to ensure pupils meet their targets but will in addition provide a broad curriculum that excites the pupils.
Speaking for all the staff and Governors of the School we share that common vision outlined above. Further, we believe that a close working partnership with you the parents will be of benefit to your child, yourselves and the School and the wider community that we serve.
Whether your child will be joining us from Costessey Infant School into our Year 3 classes or from another School into any of our Year Groups, I look forward to welcoming you and your child. An open evening for new parents and a visit for pupils are arranged in the summer term. However if you wish to view the School before these meetings you are most welcome to make an appointment and I will be pleased to show you round.
